DBSA South Bay/Support Group
“We’ve been there. We can help.”
The mission of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) is to provide hope and support to help improve the lives of people living with mood disorders. One way this is accomplished is through DBSA group meetings. These meetings provide peer-based, recovery-oriented support and resources.
For this group to be effective, we follow these guidelines:
1. Share the Air. Everyone who wishes to share has an opportunity to do so. No one person should monopolize the group time.
2. One person speaks at a time. Each person should first be allowed to speak free from interruptions and side conversations, after which open discussion is OK.
3. What is said here stays here. This is the essential principle of confidentiality, and MUST be respected by all.
4. Differences of opinion are OK. We are ALL entitled to our own point of view.
5. We are all equal. We accept cultural, linguistic, social and racial differences and promote their acceptance.
6. Use "l" language. Because we do not participate in discussion groups as credentialed professionals, No one can instruct. We, however, do share from our own personal experiences. We are unique individuals, and, along with our doctor's recommendations, only we know what is best for our own health. Example: "ln my experience, I have found the following things to be helpful."
7. It’s OK not to share. People do not have to share if they do not wish to. Much can be gained by just listening.
8. It’s everyone's responsibility to make the discussion groups a safe place to share. Respect confidentiality, treat each other with respect and kindness, and show compassion. Sexual harassment, which includes, but is not limited to, inappropriate sexual comments, jokes and other insulting or degrading remarks, gestures and uninvited touching, will not be tolerated.
9. Please silence your cell phone and refrain from using profanity.
10. These guidelines must be followed in any and all interactions and communications between and among all group members, regardless of the activity or location.
DBSA MOOD SCALE - Where do you fit in?
100: Elated, raging, incoherent, belligerent. Can't stop talking! Hallucinations, paranoia.
90: Elated, delusional, distortions of time. Unable to control emotions and thoughts.
80: Feel everything is working perfectly. Elated. Sleeping very little. Hostile, racing thoughts. Inappropriate spending.
70: Overactive, talkative. Many ideas for projects. Scattered creativity. Socially inappropriate and slightly obtrusive.
60: Feel positive, confident, creative, high energy. May want to spend money, travel. Awareness of hyperactivity.
50: Feel good, productive. Good concentration. One day at a time. Deal with problems. Can plan ahead and carry through.
40: Mild depression. Lack of energy, anxious. Going through the motions.
30: Moderate depression. Loss of energy, disinterest in others. Weight, sleep, appetite disturbances. Function with effort. Anxious & isolated.
20: Depressed, feel abandoned. Sleep disturbance. Withdrawn. Suicidal thoughts not acted on. Obsessing.
10: Very depressed, feel abandoned. Serious sleep disturbance. Very withdrawn, suicidal thoughts not acted on. Obsessing.
0: Unable to eat, take medication. Delusional, stuporous, stares into space. Very little response when questioned. Suicidal thoughts not acted on.
